NATURE / SOUND / BALANCE

Fall Creek

A cairn at the water's edge.
Lift a stone. Find where it rests.

In balance
How to explore
  1. 01
    Find your own view

Drag the creek to orbit. Scroll to move closer to the cairn.

  2. 02
    Rebuild the cairn

Drag a stone to carry it, aim over the stack and release to set it down. Scroll turns a held stone. Larger stones lag and swing. Tap to nudge.

  3. 03
    Listen closely

Click the trees for wind, the creek for water and the mushrooms for spores. Hold a press to play stronger. A carried stone sings its own note, and a rebuilt cairn brings the melody home.

  4. 04
    Turn the day

Spin the Earth to change the light. Let a full day unfold in 10, 30, or 60 minutes, or choose another place on the globe. The music darkens at dusk; crickets and fireflies join after dark. Around noon a shower sometimes passes; press R to bring the rain.

Materials & credits

Terrain, water, trees, stones, mushrooms and moss are generated in code for this study. Sun and moon positions follow the location chosen in Solar Time. Solar Time uses SunCalc (BSD-2-Clause), Natural Earth land (public domain) and NASA Earth Observatory Black Marble 2016 night lights. The score is a supplied MIDI study of Aphex Twin’s Stone in Focus, shared with the Stone in Focus study; every sound is generated in code with the Web Audio API. Built with Three.js and Rapier.
