A glass snow globe holding a sage farmhouse on a hill at golden hour, among autumn birches and maples

About this piece

Nothing in this globe is the point, and everything is. A leaf on the pond, the lamp in one window, a pin passing the comb, a curl of chimney smoke: each is small enough to miss. Together they make an afternoon. Wind the key, touch anything, and listen to how much a small thing can change the song.

In the details

The back patio at golden hour: a crackling fire pit ringed by Adirondack chairs beside a teal hot tub
The farmhouse's garage side and wraparound porch, with a stone garden bed and pumpkins on the lawn

Field notes

  1. No. 01 — The key

The brass winding key on the side of the music box

A brass ratchet. Wind it, and the afternoon begins.

  2. No. 02 — The comb

The brass comb lit as a pin passes, beside the pinned drum of the music box

Every pin that passes it is a note. Fling the drum backwards and the song plays in reverse.

  3. No. 03 — The maple

Orange and red maples at golden hour, with pumpkins on the lawn

Tap it and its own leaves let go, falling to a swung arpeggio.

  4. No. 04 — The cloud

A small cloud floating inside the globe at golden hour

It wobbles and answers with glass motifs in a ping-pong echo.

  5. No. 05 — The pond

Ripples on the pond among lily pads and cattails at golden hour

A deep bell, and the room opens wider.

  6. No. 06 — The window

The farmhouse at dusk, with lamplight along the porch and in the windows

Lamplight that wraps the tune in velvet.

  7. No. 07 — The smoke

A curl of smoke rising from the stone chimney into a golden-hour sky

A shimmer that rises off the melody.

  8. No. 08 — The firefly

Fireflies over the pond at night, below the lamplit porch

    One answers after dark.
